DCGraphics’ Top Five Teen Social Networking Sites

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

In the past 5 years social networking sites have been on the rise. The main users are teenagers. With sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, its not very hard to tell that teenagers have made a very big impact on social media. With that being said, I’m going to count down the top five social networking sites teens use.

No. 5: Tumblr

Tumblr is a blogging site that allows users to post text, images, video, links, quotes, and audio to their “tumblelog.” Like the other social networking site Twitter, Tumblr users can follow one another and see posts on their dashboard. Users can also  “like” or “reblog” posts from other blogs on the site. Since its start in 2007  Tumblr has acquired more than 3 million users and is quickly on its way to becoming one of the elite social networking sites of our time.

No. 4: Formspring

Formspring, launched in late 2009, is a question and answer site.  A user page is created and questions can be asked, with the answers being public. The site can also be connected to Facebook and Twitter. Users can opt either to allow or deny anonymous questions, the default being to allow them. Because of this, the service is open to abuse, and has received some  backlash in the media during the last couple of months.  All in all, teens continue to use this site with caution as it continues to grow.

No.3: MySpace

Although MySpace is the second largest social media site in the world, it is number three on my list because of its decline in popularity. Back in 2006 MySpace was all the rage. EVERYONE had a MySpace but then Facebook blew up. Suddenly spending hours revamping your page and checking for new requests every five minutes didn’t seem as important anymore. MySpace still tries to attract users with all the usual gimmicks and whatnot but you can’t help when something just isn’t as popular as it used to be.

No.2: Twitter

Out of all the sites featured, I think Twitter is the site that has grown the fastest.  Of course when you have people like the Kardashians, Oprah, and even good ole Barack Obama it’s really hard not to become popular. Twitter ranks number two because like I stated before it’s growing. It’s gradually becoming cool. Teens are learning that most college students communicate through Twitter. Which makes it attractive to graduating seniors and upcoming seniors. I’d say in the next 2 years Twitter will be larger than life.

NO.1: FACEBOOK

Despite all the recent setbacks and issues with Facebook about privacy and whatnot, it’s still holds the number one spot in my eyes. All the layout changes and privacy affairs couldn’t keep everyone away from Facebook. It’s addicting. It’s the only place where talking to a wall is okay. For many teens Facebook is their life. People fight, makeup, breakup, and do everything else under the sun on Facebook. Which is why it is number one.

What’s your top five?
