DCGraphics’ Top Five Teen Social Networking Sites

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

In the past 5 years social networking sites have been on the rise. The main users are teenagers. With sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, its not very hard to tell that teenagers have made a very big impact on social media. With that being said, I’m going to count down the top five social networking sites teens use.

No. 5: Tumblr

Tumblr is a blogging site that allows users to post text, images, video, links, quotes, and audio to their “tumblelog.” Like the other social networking site Twitter, Tumblr users can follow one another and see posts on their dashboard. Users can also  “like” or “reblog” posts from other blogs on the site. Since its start in 2007  Tumblr has acquired more than 3 million users and is quickly on its way to becoming one of the elite social networking sites of our time.

No. 4: Formspring

Formspring, launched in late 2009, is a question and answer site.  A user page is created and questions can be asked, with the answers being public. The site can also be connected to Facebook and Twitter. Users can opt either to allow or deny anonymous questions, the default being to allow them. Because of this, the service is open to abuse, and has received some  backlash in the media during the last couple of months.  All in all, teens continue to use this site with caution as it continues to grow.

No.3: MySpace

Although MySpace is the second largest social media site in the world, it is number three on my list because of its decline in popularity. Back in 2006 MySpace was all the rage. EVERYONE had a MySpace but then Facebook blew up. Suddenly spending hours revamping your page and checking for new requests every five minutes didn’t seem as important anymore. MySpace still tries to attract users with all the usual gimmicks and whatnot but you can’t help when something just isn’t as popular as it used to be.

No.2: Twitter

Out of all the sites featured, I think Twitter is the site that has grown the fastest.  Of course when you have people like the Kardashians, Oprah, and even good ole Barack Obama it’s really hard not to become popular. Twitter ranks number two because like I stated before it’s growing. It’s gradually becoming cool. Teens are learning that most college students communicate through Twitter. Which makes it attractive to graduating seniors and upcoming seniors. I’d say in the next 2 years Twitter will be larger than life.

NO.1: FACEBOOK

Despite all the recent setbacks and issues with Facebook about privacy and whatnot, it’s still holds the number one spot in my eyes. All the layout changes and privacy affairs couldn’t keep everyone away from Facebook. It’s addicting. It’s the only place where talking to a wall is okay. For many teens Facebook is their life. People fight, makeup, breakup, and do everything else under the sun on Facebook. Which is why it is number one.

What’s your top five?

Facebook’s New Privacy Settings: Do You Feel Safe?

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

After the brewing controversy over releasing user info to third party companies, Facebook has FINALLY upgraded their privacy settings. The new settings are supposed to make it easy for one to control who sees certain elements of their profile and they will prevent user info from being leaked. Some of the changes are great while others are a tad shady. We now have the option of controlling weather or not our profiles are indexed by public search engines (i.e. google, bing, etc.) . Users also now have to enter their password when changing privacy settings. This change is a little iffy. I just changed some of my settings and no password was required. I guess they’re still working out the kinks on that one. Also, Facebook is giving users the ultimate control of who sees what on their profile. Got pictures of you having too much fun at the bar? Now you can control who sees your fun times at Thirsty Thursdays. You can actually single out people so that they don’t see certain things. This applies to statuses, notes, and anything else you can think of. The age of people loosing their jobs over Facebook has now ENDED!

Finally, the worst change of them all: Facebook is making it virtually impossible to controls weather or not we want others to see our profile pictures, fan pages, friends list, and a plethora of other things. This doesn’t sit well with many people seeing as though this is one of the main this that we should be able to control.

Now that it’s all said and done, are you happy with the new changes over on the Book of Faces? Comment below.

Ocoee Middle School

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This is such a great idea for the Ocoee Middle School to create alternative learning for their kids. The public schools all across the U.S. need to focus on how to create a new learning environment for these kids, because the old teaching is defiantly not working. The activities shows the Ocoee Middle notice that you have to create other ways for kids to learn. I bet that all those kids will remember the lyrics of that song for years to come.

Web 2.0 and Tiger Woods

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Tiger WoodsI found a great article about the recent events dealing with Tiger Woods. But before I go into talking about this over drawn out situation, I think having a strategy for PR is helpful to know. You must know the steps that you need to take just in case of either an angry consumer, fan or recent employee wants to bad mouth your brand. Now your brand could be a person or a company that is has a suifficate amount of followers and that has some kind of impression on its industry.

In the case of Tiger Wood, something is diffidently wrong with the handling of his brand. With the scandal of his wife vandalizing his car and himself and the recent excessive lovers he has been with in the past while been married. But I think that is besides the point, what is this situation going to do with future business that Tiger associates his name to, such as Nike and his own Tiger Woods Foundation?

According to http://prdisasters.com/, whoever is advising Tiger is not doing a great job. Some of the suggestions are to use is the four R’s of crisis management: Regret, Responsibility, Remedial action and Real. These four steps are a great way to help address the situation for any company or personal brand. You must not wait for other negative things to arise. Tiger PR should have had him do a TV appearance to apologize as soon as they could, before the social and media 2.0 starts spreading like wildfire.

It seems that in the past couple a years there has been a lot of apologies with top executives and celebrities. I think that best suggestion is the so call, Face the Music and own up to your faults and to be sincere.
